Atrial fibrillation can cause many symptoms that range from rapid heartbeat, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, swelling in your legs, and inability to sleep. The question that people ask is, "when should I go to the emergency room versus calling my doctor?" What I like to explain to my patients is that if you are really feeling like you're an extremest, you can't breathe, you're having chest pain - you really should call 911 and get to the emergency room ASAP. But if your symptoms are not bothering you very much, but you do notice, or you're cognizant of something a little bit weird, but your blood pressure is fine, your heart rate is fine - it's okay at that point to just call and make an appointment to see your physician.
